the Captain
George Vorrias

Captain George Vorrias may have started out on cargo ships and passenger ships, but his passion has always been with yachting. A superyacht captain for 13 years, he joined Mia Rama in 2018 following stints at Parenthesis, Pollux and Sapphire, and describes himself as a captain with a calm and relaxed manner whose door is always open to both crew and guests alike.

So what can you expect from a charter under his command? “Each charter is unique, and we can create unforgettable, one-of-a-kind experiences for all charter guests,” he says. “Whether they are after a cultural charter, an educational one, a wellness-focused retreat or an adventure charter, or if they are celebrating a life milestone, we cater to it all.”

From overseeing the day-to-day operations of Mia Rama to helping arrange romantic marriage proposals on the beach, no day in the life of Captain Vorrias ever looks the same. Here we drill him on everything from the yacht’s most spectacular features and experiences on offer to itineraries, the crew and his love of going above and beyond, whatever the occasion.

Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got into yachting?

I started my career as a bridge officer on cargo ships and passenger ships. My goal was to get the relevant experience in that role before I made the move to yachting, which had always excited me.

How long have you been a captain and what are some of the yachts you’ve worked on?

I’ve been a superyacht captain since 2008 and have worked on Parenthesis, Pollux and Sapphire. I joined Mia Rama in 2018 and haven’t looked back since.

How would you describe the owner’s vision for the yacht?

He wants everyone who charters his yacht to have a high quality and luxurious experience, while guaranteeing high performance, safety, and haute services. He of course takes comfort, safety and pleasure into consideration, and the yacht excels in all these areas.

How would you describe the ambiance on board?

Mia Rama offers a hospitable, friendly, relaxed and cheerful ambiance, and always maintains a high level of professionalism from all staff on board.

What’s your personal style as captain?

I generally approach work in a very calm and relaxed manner. I want everyone around me, and primarily my staff, to feel that they can approach me with any concerns they may have, while simultaneously exuding peace of mind and uncompromised efficiency. I do not compromise on safety, but at the same time I am hospitable and friendly.

What are some of the standout features of the yacht?

She has a genuinely lovely exterior design and offers comfortable spaces inside. Most guests tend to gather on the swimming platform and the main salon sun deck.

What types of experience can you offer charter guests?

Each charter is unique, and we can create unforgettable, one-of-a-kind experiences for all charter guests. Whether they are after a cultural charter, an educational one, a wellness-focused retreat or an adventure charter, or if they are celebrating a life milestone, we cater to it all. We can customise the itinerary to suit all interests, and we know where the most beautiful locations are, whether there is a beach (private and not), an ancient artefact – you name it, we know it.

How would you describe the style and approach of the crew?

All staff have been trained to the highest standard. They are all extremely hospitable professionals happy to be working in the yachting industry, and they give their all to make sure guests have the most exciting and rewarding experience possible.

Please share some examples where you and your crew have gone above and beyond to make the guest experience as special as possible.

There have been times where guests have entrusted us with arranging and executing the most special moments of their lives – an engagement, for example. We have done so with gusto and made sure every last detail, including making sure that there would be no other person walking on the beach at a specific moment, was perfect. It may sound easy, but it’s not! We will always go above and beyond for every client to make sure their moments on the yacht and their time with us is special and one-of-a-kind.

How are the yacht and the crew prepared to accommodate children and teenagers on charter?

When children and teenagers are on board, the crew have been instructed to always ensure their safety is a priority. All staff have completed their safety and first aid training, too. Fun is also a priority too, though, and the deck crew is always incredibly happy to keep the kids and teenagers entertained with watersports, as well as indoor toys and playtime for the younger kids.

How would you describe the cuisine on board?

Mia Rama’s chef exceeds all expectations. He is familiar with cuisine from all over the world, and is known to create beautifully set and delicious dishes with gastronomical delights from any region or country.

Tell us about the toys and tenders – which toys are the most popular with guests?

We have a new tender Scanner 6.10m, water skis, a flyboard, various tubes, diving equipment and SeaBobs, which are the most popular because you can combine the walk with relaxation and exploration.

What are your usual cruising grounds?

We mainly cruise the Mediterranean and Red Sea.

Which destinations are your personal favourites and why?

It has to be the Ionian Islands for their many private beaches and the Aegean islands for their unique beauty.

What have been some of the highlights or your favourite memories as captain of Mia Rama?

The favorite memories are the smiles that I see from our guests whenever they make a journey on Mia Rama. They make me feel proud of the yacht and my crew.
